Introducing York's RED Zone

This week launches York's RED Zone – a pilot program involving close collaboration between all members of the York community who deal with students, from acceptance of their offer of admission and arrival in September to the end of first term. The RED Zone services are available to Canadian high-school, international, college and university transfer and mature students.

The Zone will run Monday to Friday, 10:30am to 2:30pm, May 1 to July 28 in N102, Student Services Centre.

New students are encouraged to come to York's RED Zone before or after an Advising/Enrolment Appointment or on any other day during the three-month period. By spending anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes, students can complete many of the tasks they need to address before the start of classes. The Zone is a one-stop shop featuring nine senior students (well-versed in all things York) who will introduce services, programs and resources that will help make the transition to York smooth and successful.

Some of the tasks students can accomplish in the Zone include:

  • getting a YU-Card;
  • learning how to access Passport York;
  • finding answers to important money questions, including bursaries, RESPs & OSAP;
  • registering for a student club or association;
  • discovering details about Student Orientation and the York Day Information Fair; and
  • signing up for college-hosted events for incoming students.

Members of the York community are invited to York's RED Zone Open House which takes place Friday, May 5, from 9 to 10am, in N102 Student Services Centre on the Keele campus.

York's RED Zone is the first initiative of the New Student Transition Council. A combined effort of the offices of the Vice-President Academic and Vice-President Students, the council brings together Faculty advising centres, York's colleges, the Office of Admissions, York’s Student Housing Department, Parking & Transportation, Security, Student Community & Leadership Development, Student Client Services, Career Centre, Alumni Services and Marketing & Communications.

The purpose of the council is to optimize the transition experience for new students. The objectives are to share best practices, integrate and strengthen our messages, provide direction to students in a cohesive and stepped manner, create a forum for discussing common issues, coordinate transition activities, achieve greater process efficiencies and economies of scale and share ways of meeting the needs of parents.
