York will present six academic excellence awards during Convocation ceremonies June 12-17.
Governor General’s Gold Medals for highest academic standing at the graduate level will go to two recipients: Rebecca Anderson (left), who earned a PhD in chemistry from the Faculty of Science & Engineering in 2005, and Elizabeth Piper, who completed a PhD in history in 2005 from the Faculty of Arts. (Piper recently won the 2006 Rachel Carson Prize for Best Dissertation in Environmental History from the American Society for Environmental History.)
Three undergraduate students will receive Governor General’s Silver Medals, awarded for highest distinction in scholarship. This year’s recipients are Michael Hartman, who graduated in 2005 with a BA in psychology from the Faculty of Arts; David Horovitz, who graduates this year with a BSc in biology from the Faculty of Science & Engineering; and Evelyne Kostanska, who graduated in 2005 with a BA in women’s studies from the Faculty of Arts.
This year’s recipient of the Murray G. Ross Award is Françoise Guigne, who graduates with a BA in anthropology from the Faculty of Arts. The award was established by the student council in 1962 in honour of York’s first president and is awarded for scholarship and outstanding contributions to undergraduate student life.
