York’s Graduate Program in Education will present a special Summer Institute Colloquium on July 11. Three international visiting scholars who are currently at York University will make brief presentations about their research. They include Patricia Ames, a professor in the Faculty of Education at the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia and in Faculty of Social Sciences at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru; Professor Graciela Cordero Arroyo, School of Languages, Autonomous University of Baja California in Mexico; and Professor Merida Figueredo Reyes, Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Havana, Cuba.
The presentations will take place from 2 to 3:30pm in S805, Ross Building on York’s Keele campus. The presentations will be followed by a question and answer period.
Patricia Ames (right) teaches at two universities in Lima, Peru: the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia (Faculty of Education) and the Pontificial Catholic University of Peru (Faculty of Social Sciences). Ames also works at the Institute of Peruvian Studies, an important social research centre in the country. Her research has concentrated mainly in rural education, approaching a variety of issues such as gender, power relations at school, multigrade organization and teaching, political socialization, literacy practices in rural areas, family and community learning, teacher training and action research.
Graciela Cordero Arroyo (left) has published extensively on teacher education and has various online publications on education. She is a member of the National System of Researchers in Mexico and is currently the director of the Institute for Research and Development in Education at the Autonomous University of Baja California, Mexico.
Merida Figueredo Reyes (left) is the head of the English for Specific Purposes Department at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Havana in Cuba. Over the last 25 years she taught several courses on methods of teaching English as a foreign language, teaching English for specific purposes, English as a second language, and Spanish as a foreign language.
