Thinking about cities
The National Post reprinted an Ottawa Citizen editorial July 25 praising the creation of city research centres. The CanWest News Service editorial argued that the world’s population is becoming increasingly concentrated in urban environments, and it’s important that policy-makers research implications of this phenomenon. Happily, Ontario is becoming a major centre for just this kind of research. York University already has The City Institute, and now the University of Toronto is injecting $1.75 million to build a new Cities Centre.
Music for grown-ups
CanWest News Service has picked up a July 24 Ottawa Citizen story about how it’s not too late for adults to learn a musical instrument. There’s always “unknowable stuff about music and art, but fundamentally some (jazz) basics are very simple things you can learn,” says Mark Eisenman, a Toronto jazz pianist and York University instructor.
Law grad named president of Barrie Rotary Club
George Cameron, newly inducted president of the Rotary Club of Barrie, is proud to lead it into its 60th anniversary year, reported the Barrie Examiner July 25. Cameron does corporate and commercial law as a partner in the firm Graham, Wilson & Green. He received a master of laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1999 with a specialty in bankruptcy and insolvency.
