Aboriginal students attending York will have an opportunity to learn more about the many resources available at the University this Thursday when the Office of Aboriginal Student Community presents a Welcome Social for Aboriginal students.
The social will take place Sept. 14, from 1 to 4pm, in the Aboriginal Student Resource Centre, Room 283 in the Health, Nursing & Environmental Studies (HNES) Building on York’s Keele campus.
Randy Pitawankwat, coordinator of the Office of Aboriginal Student Community within York’s Centre for Student Community and Leadership Development, is organizing the event to provide members of York’s Aboriginal student community with an opportunity to meet and mingle with each other. Guest speakers will include Pitawankwat, York VP Students Rob Tiffin, Frank Cappadocia, director student community & leadership development, Atkinson School of Arts & Letters Professor David McNab and Corrie Sakaluk, president, York Federation of Students.

“The social gives students an opportunity to learn more about the University,” said Pitawankwat. “In addition to our guest speakers, we will be providing some light refreshments. We are also holding draws for some York memorabilia and clothing.”
Located in Room 280, HNES, the Office of Aboriginal Student Community provides and serves all Aboriginal students on campus. The centre is a quiet place with a work study area furnished with computers, printer and telephone. It is equipped with small kitchen appliances such as a mini-fridge, microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker for monthly social events and personal use. The centre also serves as a resource library where all York students and faculty members have access to a variety of information on Aboriginal issues. This includes books, publications and documents.
