On Sunday, Sept.17, York University celebrated the memory and spirit of cancer-crusader Terry Fox at York’s eighth annual Terry Fox Run. Over 150 members of the York community came together to celebrate the 26th anniversary of Fox’s cross-country Marathon of Hope.

York University’s Keele campus has been an official site for the Terry Fox Run for the past eight years, raising over $100,000 for cancer research. This year, a significant amount was added to York’s total, a fact that thrills Kiran Singh, the charity & entertainment director for York is U, the University’s student alumni program and organizer of the event. “It looks like we raised approximately $10,000,” says Singh. “This will certainly help in the fight against cancer.”
Participants were invited to run, jog, walk, bike and even rollerblade along the route, which ran along Ian McDonald Boulevard, from Northwest Gate to Chimneystack Road. Free drinks and snacks were provided to all participants by York is U.

York students, administration, faculty and alumni came together to show their support. Schulich School of Business Dean Dezsö J. Horváth, who brought the Terry Fox Run to York University in 1998, has participated in each of the annual runs and did so again this year. Also participating in the run was Frank Cappadocia, director of the Centre for Student Community & Leadership Development at York.
The event was enjoyed by all those who participated, including Christina Cautiloo, a student from the Schulich School of Business and a coordinator of this year’s event. “We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to have the run. The sun was shining and all the runners were enjoying themselves,” she said. “It was good to see so many people from the community come out to the event on campus.”
The first nationwide Terry Fox Run in 1981 attracted 300,000 people and raised over $3.5 million to support cancer research. To date, more that $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Fox’s name.
