Igor Djordjevic, a specialist in English Renaissance literature, is the Glendon English Department’s newest recruit.
Serbian-born Djordjevic earned a BA in English literature from the State University of New York in Binghamton, and an MA (2001) and PhD (2005) from the University of Toronto.

Drawn to the literature of the English Renaissance, he has scoured the works of Shakespeare, Marlowe and other writers to gain an understanding of Renaissance society’s concepts of its past. “What interests me is the influence that literary works have on a given society’s notion of their history,” he says. “When we study Renaissance literature through the lens of historical relevance, we realize that writers continue to use and abuse history. And, in fact, we can apply this prism to the present as well, and have a clearer understanding of our current historical concepts and messages.”
Djordjevic is teaching three courses: a first-year course on literary genres, a third-year course on Renaissance literature, and, next term, a new fourth-year course on the literary uses of history in the Renaissance.
He is writing a book on accounts of the 100 Years’ War and the Wars of the Roses in Hollingshed’s Chronicles to determine how people in Renaissance England perceived these nation-defining events.
