Zacks Gallery exhibits alumna’s abstracts

An exhibit of paintings by York student and alumna Elizabeth Yiannoulis opens today at the Samuel J. Zacks Art Gallery in Stong College 109.

The exhibit, Undisguised: Retrospect, continues to Nov. 17 and features abstract work done since 1999 by the prize-winning Toronto artist. Viewers can meet Yiannoulis at an opening reception Nov. 2 from 6 to 8pm at the gallery.

Yiannoulis has four undergraduate degrees from York in fine arts, arts and education. She is currently studying for a masters in education at York. This is her third show at Zacks Gallery in three years.

A passionate life-long learner, Yiannoulis is the beneficiary of a Pepsi Grant, the Jack Bush Scholarship Award, an Art Talent Scholarship, a Women’s Club Scholarship and numerous other awards. Her abstract work tells the story of her life, and she credits artists Jack Bush and Mark Rothko for their visual and sensory inspiration.

“Art is personal,” says Yiannoulis, “and it begins when one has truly achieved a desired level of self-actualization.”

At the Nov. 2 reception, Yiannoulis (left) will be selling $5 tickets for a draw of one of her paintings to raise money for the music department at Portage Trail Community Middle School.

Yiannoulis’ work can also be viewed online. For more information, contact Zacks Gallery at ext. 33055 or e-mail zacks@yorku.ca.
