The York Noor Lecture Series 2006-2007, which is jointly sponsored by York University and the Noor Cultural Centre, presents the Tarab Ensemble in a concert on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 8pm.
Tarab Ensemble, founded in 1998, is a group of New York-based musicians who focus on studying and performing instrumental and vocal classical Arabic music, with special emphasis on the Andalusi Muwashah and Sufi repertoire. The ensemble also explores traditional folk music from various regions of the Arabic world. The band gives importance to both vocal and instrumental improvisation, allowing each musician to explore the Arabic scales (or maqam).
