The Canadian Information Productivity Awards (CIPA) recently announced that the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET) is a 2006 Award of Excellence recipient. CIPA is Canada’s oldest and largest awards program in the field of information technology. The award was presented to SHARCNET on Nov. 1 at the Westin Harbour Castle Conference Centre in Toronto.
York University is a member of SHARCNET which is a High Performance Computing (HPC) institute that links 16 leading academic institutions in south-central Ontario. It enables researchers to employ extremely powerful computers to accelerate the pace of their research in a cost-effective, virtual environment and to address complex scientific problems that could not otherwise be studied.
SHARCNET was selected as a Silver Award of Excellence winner for Efficiency & Operational Improvements (not for profit sector) based on an entry which outlined its use of high performance computing technology over an advanced fibre optics network.
