The York Lions men’s volleyball team earned head coach Wally Dyba his 300th career victory Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Ontario University Athletics (OUA)-leading and No. 5 ranked Ryerson Rams, 3 to 1. Dyba has achieved an all-time high, earning more wins as a coach in the history of the OUA regular season.

In the contest, Ryan Anderson became York’s all-time kills leader with more than 700 in his five-year career with the Lions. Paul Podstawka led the team with 16 kills and three aces. The win was the fourth-straight for the squad as it moved into a three-way tie for second place in the OUA with Queen’s University and McMaster University. The Lions boast a 9 to3 record, good for 18 points, only two behind the front-running Rams. The next action for the Lions comes in early January when they play host to the annual Excalibur Volleyball Tournament Jan. 5 to 7, 2007 at the Tait McKenzie Centre on York’s Keele campus.
The men’s basketball team also set aside a top ten team last week, defeating the No. 6-ranked Windsor Lancers, 81 to 63. Captain Dan Eves had a huge game, dropping 34 points, while adding five rebounds and a game-high four blocks. Jordan Foebel chipped in with a game-high 19 boards and 12 points. On Saturday, the visiting Western Mustangs snapped the Lions’ six-game winning streak, topping the hosts 77 to 74. Rohan Steen scored a game-high 27 points and Foebel added 25, but it wasn’t enough as the team lost for the first time on home court this season. The Lions next action comes in late December when they participate in the Ed DeArmon Memorial tournament at Ryerson University in Toronto.
The women’s basketball team continued to play well, winning two more at home last weekend over the University of Windsor and the University of Western Ontario. With the victories, the Lions improve to 4 to 0 at home and 7to 2 on the year, good for first place in the OUA East division. On Friday, the team thumped the visiting Lancers 84 to 47. The following night, the team used a solid second-half performance to down the Mustangs 55 to 48. This week’s female Athlete of the Week, Laura MacCallum (right), continued her strong play for the Lions, leading the team in scoring in both contests. For the third-year guard, it was her second Athlete of the Week nod this season. The team doesn’t play again until early January when it travels to Kingston for a pair of games against Queen’s University and the Royal Military College.
The Lions women’s volleyball team improved to 4 to1 at home this season with a 3 to 0 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Saturday. The win moves into third place in the OUA East division. Elizabeth Salas paced the squad with 10 kills, while nine other players all recorded at least two kills of their own.
This week, women’s volleyball head coach Hernan Humaña jetted off to Santiago, Chile as the featured instructor and presenter on a series of beach volleyball seminars. Humaña was invited by Catholic University of Chile to deliver a players’ camp from Dec. 8 to 10 and a coaches’ seminar from Dec. 11to13. Humaña is a three-time OUA East Coach of the Year, a 11-year member of Chile’s National Volleyball team and the former head coach of Canada’s bronze medal-winning tandem of John Child and Mark Heese at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. The men’s hockey team earned three of a possible four points from the Guelph Gryphons last week, playing to a 5 to 2 win before falling 4 to 3 in overtime. Tyler Harrison (left) had an outstanding week for the squad helping him earn Athlete of the Week recognition. In the road victory over the Gryphons, Harrison scored once and added an assist. On Saturday, the second-year centre was in on all the Lions scoring, as he found the back of the net twice and set up another. Through 15 games, he leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and nine assists. The team returns to the ice in early January when they face-off against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
The women’s hockey team lost a pair of one-goal contests last week. In both games, the Lions fell behind and were forced to play catch-up. On Saturday, Jessica Turi scored York’s only marker in a 2 to 1 loss to the host Brock Badgers. The following afternoon in Waterloo, the University of Waterloo Warriors opened up a 3 to 0 lead en route to a 3 to 2 victory. Mandy Cole scored once and assisted on Samantha Solheim’s marker in the loss. Melanie Quinn made 62 saves over the two-game stretch. The Lions next home game is Jan. 13 when they play host to the Western Mustangs.
