After upsetting the Carelton Ravens, the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, the York Lions men’s basketball team returns to the Tait McKenzie Centre this weekend for the fourth annual Staff, Faculty and Alumni Appreciation Night on Saturday. This special event recognizes the hard work and contributions these groups provide the university. Sport York offers free admission all staff, faculty and alumni as well as their families. On Saturday, the Lions will face off against Ontario University Athletic East Division rivals Queen’s at 8pm. The team will also battle RMC on Friday night.
Last week, men’s basketball Lions defeated Carleton for the first time in 11 regular season meetings, 95-81. This week’s Male Athlete of the Week Dan Eves (right) was almost perfect on the night, shooting 7 of 8 from the floor and 5 of 6 from three-point range for 24 points in the Lions upset win. He also had 17 points in the Lions loss to Ottawa the night before.
This past weekend, the No. 5-ranked women’s basketball Lions swept Ottawa , 82-60, and Carleton, 74-65, extending their winning streak to 10 games and improving their regular season record to 15-2. Reanne Holden led the team in the victory over Ottawa with a game-high 15 points; Emily Van Hoof claimed a game-high 24 points on 8 of 10 shooting in the game against Carleton. This week, the team takes on RMC at 6pm on Friday night and Queen’s on Saturday at 6pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The men’s volleyball team captured a win this weekend in their last home game of the season, taking the Toronto Varsity Blues in three straight sets. Ryan Anderson led the team with 14 points and 14 kills, while James Battiston followed with 12 points and 12 kills. The Lions travel to Kingston this weekend to take on Queen’s and RMC.
The women’s volleyball team split a pair of contests last week, defeating Brock, 3-1, and falling to OUA East Division rivals Toronto, 3-2. This week’s Female Athlete of the Week, Elizabeth Salas (left) led the team with a game-high 16 kills and 18 points over Brock. Salas added 14 kills and 17 points in the loss to Toronto. This week, the Lions head east to take on RMC on Saturday.
Last week, the Lions track & field team competed in the McGill Team Challenge, placing fifth. Jared Lewis claimed gold in the men’s 60-metre race with a meet record time of 6.75, earning himself a spot in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship. Kaitlin Coopman ran a personal best time of 3:01:46 in the women’s 1,000m solidifying her place in the OUA Championship. The Lions host the York Classic this Saturday at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.
The men’s hockey team hosts OUA West Division rival Lakehead this Friday and Saturday. The Lions went 1-1-1 last week, losing to Western, 3-1, and tying Waterloo, 3-3, before defeating Windsor, 9-2, to close out the weekend. Captain Blair Grennier led the team with three goals against the Lancers, while Sean Langdon added three assists.
The women’s hockey team was winless in games against Toronto, 3-2, and Queen’s, 3-2. Serene Porter and Michelle Guy netted two goals against Toronto. This week, the Lions take on Laurier on Saturday at Canlan Ice Sports Arena, on York’s Keele campus. Game time is 2pm.
