At the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Track & Field Championships over the weekend, the Lions men’s track & field team finished third overall, while the women's track & field squad recorded a fifth-place finish. In the men’s 60-metre dash, the Lions swept the podium with Dennison Collins claiming gold, Justin McLennan winning silver and Jared Lewis taking bronze. Marlon Nangle also won gold in the triple jump and Ben Krul (right) this week’s male Athlete of the Week, captured gold in the pentathlon. Both athletes set meet records in their respective disciplines and are ranked No. 1 in the country. The men’s 4x200m relay team took silver as did Chris Theriau in the 60m hurdles and McLennan in the 300m. In the pentathlon, rookie Elijah Allen won bronze. On the women’s side, Sarah Katz brought home gold in the 600m and anchored the silver-medal winning 4x400m relay team. In the high jump, Kristen Matthews won silver. In total, the squad took home 12 medals. Ten members of the men's team and six from the women's team are set to travel to the CIS nationals, March 8-10, at Montreal's McGill University.
The York Lions women’s basketball team is heading back to OUA Championship final and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) National Championship for the second-straight season. The men’s basketball season came to an end in the OUA East Semifinal as the Lions lost 68-57 to the No. 4-ranked Carleton Ravens on Saturday night. Dan Eves led the team with 17 points in his final game for York. Earlier in the week, the York posted a 95-73 victory over Queen’s in the OUA East Quarterfinal. Fifth-year captain Jordan Foebel had a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds.
The women’s hockey team ended the year on a season-high five-game winning streak after dumping the visiting Windsor Lancers 5-2 on Saturday. Jessica Turi scored twice and recorded an assist in the victory as the squad recorded its ninth win of the season - the most since 1999-2000. Despite the late-season surge, York fell two points shy of the last playoff spot in the OUA.
In a series of exhibition tennis contests hosted by York, the women’s tennis team played to a 3-3 draw with the Calgary Dinos on Monday before edging the Dinos, 3-2, on Thursday. On the men’s side, the team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Carleton.
