Student artist creates some food for thought

The Akasa Art Gallery in the Student Centre will be hosting a University-wide food and art show this week. The show, titled Free Soup, which was created by visual arts student Sarah Helen Epp, offers a visual representation of the activity of Food 4 Thought, York’s student food bank.

As part of the gallery exhibition, members of the York community are invited to participate in the building of the exhibit by donating non-perishable food items to Food 4 Thought. The exhibit will run until March 16 and the gallery is located on the second floor of the Student Centre. Donations will be placed alongside images of the North York Harvest Food Bank. Once the exhibit has ended, all donations will be given to Food 4 Thought.

Free Soup was conceived and organized by Epp as a way to celebrate giving and receiving. The exhibit also serves to inform the student community about the food bank. Using art as a tool, Epp is hoping the exhibit will bring the York community together. To encourage participation in the exhibit, Akasa will be hosting a reception on Wednesday, March 14, from 6:30 to 8:30pm, in the gallery. All are welcome to attend. Epp will be serving free soup and the reception will feature live music, with performances by jazz vocalist Ori Dagan and drum 'n bass DJ Catashtrophe.

The project is supported by the Office of the Master of Winters College, the York Federation of Students, York's Residence Life Team and the Creative Art Students Association at York.
