Hackers beware

Securing networks, shielding critical information from hackers and viruses, and preventing malicious damage to data assets are critical concerns for public and private sector organizations. The Department of Computer Science & Engineering in the Faculty of Science & Engineering at York University is hosting a special seminar with IP3, a US-based information assurance and security firm. Titled "From Strategy to Reality: The Bigger Picture", the two-day seminar will be offered Aug. 21 and 22, in the Computer Science & Engineering Building, on York’s Keele campus.

Those attending the seminar include information technology (IT) professionals, York staff, faculty and students, and academics from other institutions. The intensive two-day seminar has been designed to foster dialogue and collaboration among academic researchers, IT administrators and professionals in the industry.

"We are excited about collaborating with IP3 and pleased to host a symposium that highlights the current trends in the field of computer security. The Department of Computer Science & Engineering at York University is strongly committed to provide knowledge, research, and training to the next generation of IT leaders," says York computer science Professor Amir Asif (left), Chair of the department. "Recognizing Computer Security as an increasingly important specialization of IT, the department has launched a new undergraduate degree in computer security. The IP3 symposium on Information Security further complements these efforts."

The two-day seminar has been delivered to over 5,000 IT security professionals across the globe. It offers a forum where enterprise, government security, law enforcement, financial, management and response professionals, and private industry connect to learn, network and find the solutions needed to protect and understand their data assets. York University faculty, staff, students and the affiliated corporate partners of the University are eligible for $9,000 in scholarship funds to attend the two-day event.

"Working with York University is a tremendous opportunity," says Ken Kousky, CEO of IP3. "With cyber security a top issue for corporations and government, information technology education is critical.

"The seminar provides one of the most up-to-date perspectives on the full range of information assurance and IT security issues," says Kousky. The two-day executive forum addresses current technology issues including wireless, Voice over IP and SOA architectural issues for security, as well as the broader management issues of global regulatory compliance, security auditing and integration with a broad risk management framework.

Seminar topics address the top five IT security challenges identified by corporate security managers: multi-vendor integration, wireless device security, VoIP, internal theft of intellectual property, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, PCI, cryptography, PKI, mobile computing security and digital rights management.

Toronto is one of 20 cities IP3 will visit during its 2007 national workshop tour. Cost to attend the seminar is $895.
