If you’re a sports fan, York University is the place to be this weekend.
Six York Lions teams will play a combined total of 13 games this week in one of the University’s busiest sporting weekends of the season. Volleyball, basketball and hockey will be the featured attractions and the Tait McKenzie Centre and Canlan Ice Sports will be the prime venues.
The Lions women’s basketball team remains the school’s top winter team. York has won 23 games in a row in OUA play and it’s safe to say the Lions wouldn’t have done so without Laura MacCallum (right). The star guard scored 27 points in a win over the Guelph Gryphons this past weekend. On Friday at 6pm, the Lions face their stiffest test of the season when they battle the McMaster Marauders in a rematch of last season’s Ontario University Athletics final, won by York. Both teams are undefeated this season. The Lions then play host to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday at 6pm.
The Lions men’s basketball team, meanwhile, hasn’t enjoyed much success this season. After opening the campaign with four losses, the Lions will look to hit the win column Friday and Saturday with 8pm-games against McMaster and Lakehead.
On the ice, the Lions men’s hockey team is on a two-game winning streak for the second time this season after sweeping the Windsor Lancers in a pair of road games this past weekend. This week, the Lions take on three opponents in home games: the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday at 7pm; the Western Mustangs on Saturday at 2pm; and the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday at 2pm. Rookie forward Nathaniel Brooks (left) was named York’s male athlete of the week after registering three points against Windsor.
It wasn’t nearly as good a week for the Lions women’s hockey team, which lost 8-1 against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, dropping its record to 6-6. The Lions, who reeled off a five-game winning streak earlier this season, will try to return to previous form this weekend in home games against Windsor, Saturday, at 6pm and the Brock Badgers, Sunday, at 6pm.
Finally, the Lions volleyball teams play two doubleheaders this week against visiting opponents. They face Waterloo on Saturday at Noon for the women’s game and 2pm for men’s game. Then it’s Laurier on Sunday, again at Noon and 2pm.
