The York Lions women’s hockey team will take centre stage on the final weekend of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) regular-season play in 2007.
With most of York’s teams on the road this weekend, the women’s hockey squad has the campus to itself. The Lions play host to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, ranked fifth in the country, on Saturday, at 2pm, before entertaining the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, at 2pm.
The Lions snapped a three-game losing streak with two ties on home ice this past weekend: a 3-3 draw against the Windsor Lancers on Saturday and a 1-1 split against the Brock Badgers on Sunday. Lions star Mandy Cole (right) had a goal and three assists in those two games, putting her second in the OUA scoring race.

But the team suffered a huge blow. It was discovered Cole broke her left ankle after falling awkwardly into the end boards after a partial breakaway in the third period. She was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday.
The third-year forward had four points in two games over the weekend, moving her into a three-way tie for second in the OUA scoring race with 17 points in 14 games. The Peterborough native was named York’s female athlete of the week after her strong weekend.
While the women’s hockey team host a pair of teams from Waterloo, the Lions basketball teams will be travelling to that city for games against the Warriors Friday, at 6&8pm, and the Golden Hawks Saturday, at 6 & 8pm. The Lions women’s team improved to 6-1 with a 70-37 demolition of the Lakehead Thunderwolves this past Saturday at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Laura MacCallum led the way with 18 points for York.
The Lions men’s volleyball was the most successful school team this past weekend, going 2-0 with wins over the Warriors and Golden Hawks. Paul Podstawka (left) led the team in points and kills to help the Lions improve to 6-4. Both of York’s volleyball teams are at the University of Toronto Saturday, at noon & 2pm, to face the Varsity Blues. The women’s volleyball team (6-3) kicks off its week with a match in St. Catharines against the Brock Badgers Wednesday, at 7:30pm.
Finally, the men’s hockey team, coming off a 6-1 win over Laurier, hits the road this week for games against the Golden Hawks, the Western Mustangs and the Warriors.
