York donors rolled up their sleeves during November blood drive

The most recent Canadian Blood Services blood drive on York’s Keele campus hosted 431 donors between Nov. 12 and 16 and netted 309 units of blood. On average, one unit of blood helps three people and donations to the blood drive will be used by approximately 927 people in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Canadian Blood Services will be back on campus  for its winter blood drive from Jan. 14 to 18, 2008.

Donating blood saves lives, as everyone knows, yet only 3.5 per cent of eligible Canadians give blood. Patients in GTA hospitals use at least 650  to 700 units of blood each day. Cancer patients use an average of eight units of blood products each week during their treatment.

For more information on how to become a donor, or to schedule an opportunity to donate during one of their many clinics throughout the community, visit the Canadian Blood Services Web site  or call 1-888-2-DONATE.

York’s Health Education & Promotion unit is located within the Centre for Student Community and Leadership Development.  For more information about other health-related events taking place on campus, visit www.yorku.ca/healthed.
