It may be reading week at York University, but the Lions winter sports teams won’t be kicking back and relaxing.
It’s playoff time in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and three Lions teams begin their post-season journey this week. The Lions men’s hockey team will face the Western Mustangs in a best-of-three series that touches down at York Saturday, Feb. 16, at 2pm, for Game 2. The series opens Thursday night at Western.

The Lions are winless in their past nine games against the Mustangs, but they won seven of their final nine games this season and enter the playoffs with momentum on their side. The Lions ended their home regular season schedule with an 8-1 win over the Brock Badgers. Before that game, the Lions honoured graduating players Matt Passfield and Jerry Clarke on Grad Day.
Also this coming Saturday, Feb. 16, at 5pm, the Lions women’s volleyball team will travel to Ottawa to meet the Gee-Gees in an OUA East semi-final. The Lions have lost to Ottawa in the playoffs the past two years, so they’ll be looking for revenge this weekend.
The other playoff game for York this week will be in women’s hockey. The Lions clinched their first playoff berth since 2003 Sunday when they beat the UOIT Ridgebacks 7-2. The Lions play host to the Western Mustangs Tuesday, Feb. 
12, at 7pm, in the regular season finale before playing a sudden-death playoff game Saturday, Feb. 16, (time to be announced) on the road against the Guelph Gryphons or Queen’s Golden Gaels.

Back on campus, the Lions men’s basketball team finishes its regular-season schedule with a game against the Laurentian Voyageurs. The Lions clinched a playoff spot this weekend, during which they knocked off the fifth-ranked team in the country – the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Lions star Tut Ruach scored 63 points in two games this weekend.
