Get the red and white out, York is celebrating its 49th birthday today with festivities, entertainment, cake and more. With over 5,000 students expected to participate, the event is shaping up to be one of the biggest of the year.
Free cake is available today from 11am to 7pm in the East Bear Pit in Central Square, in the Student Centre and in York Lanes. The official cake cutting ceremony will take place in the Student Centre food court from 1 to 2pm, followed by a dazzling stage show, featuring student performances, from 3 to 5pm.

New this year is the "Special 49th Birthday Gift". Anyone wearing either red or York gear can collect a 49th birthday gift from 11am to 7pm at the East Bear Pit or the Student Centre. And that’s not all. This year "Bonne Fête" celebrations are happening at York’s Glendon campus as well.
"I’m really excited about this event. I want to make the 49th birthday count and create great memories of my time at York," says Morgane Audoin, an exchange student from France and the coordinator for the event at Glendon, who will not be at York next year when it celebrates its 50th.
