Osgoode Professor Poonam Puri receives a prestigious award

Osgoode Hall Law School Professor Poonam Puri has been awarded the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) Professional Female of the Year Award. Puri received the honour on Saturday, June 14 at the ICCC’s annual awards and gala night at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

The ICCC gala recognized the success and and achievements of Indo-Canadians in a total of 11 award categories. The black-tie event was attended by more than 1,200 ICCC members and their guests including leaders of industry, business and politics.

Puri, who was three years old when she came to Canada from India with her family, was selected for the ICCC's Professional Female of the Year award on the basis of her exceptional leadership skills, contributions to her profession, academic excellence and community involvement.

"Since her appointment to Osgoode’s faculty a decade ago, Professor Puri has become one of our country’s most respected scholars and commentators on issues of corporate governance, securities regulation and corporate law," said Patrick Monahan, dean of Osgoode Hall Law School. "She has been sought out by governments and regulators both in Canada and internationally for her keen intellect, sound judgment and common sense.

"Professor Puri is a role model, not only for members of the Indo-Canadian community but for all of our diverse communities in this country," said Monahan.

Named as one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40 for 2005, Puri currently serves as co-research director of Canada’s Expert Panel on Securities Regulation. She is also president of the Canadian Law & Economics Association and a member of the board of directors of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. In addition, she is involved in helping the Ontario Association of Food Banks, a women and children’s shelter called ETA Vaughan, and her alma mater, the University of Toronto.
