YorkU magazine strikes gold again

YorkU magazine has pulled off another win – a continental gold for Best Print Internal Audience Periodical. York University’s magazine beat out competitors from across North America to win the award given out by the Washington-based Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). It covers magazines circulating within colleges and universities.

The win is for the April and December 2007 issues of the magazine, which were produced for campus distribution (the other three issues in YorkU‘s annual cycle are also sent to alumni). This is the third consecutive year YorkU has pulled off a win in this category, having won silver twice before.

Overall, this has been a winning year for YorkU. Earlier it won gold for Best Magazine in the 2008 Prix d’Excellence competition mounted by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE), as well as two silver awards – one for Best Article, another for Best Photograph (see YFile,  May 20). YorkU also won a gold award for the design of the April 2007 cover in CASE’s regional Accolades Awards competition earlier this year (see YFile, Jan. 22).

"The award is very gratifying, coming on the heels of the CCAE gold, and seems to indicate some kind of consensus that we’re on the right track," said Berton Woodward, director of publications at York.

CASE Circle of Excellence Awards recognize outstanding efforts in institutional advancement internationally. Its membership includes nearly 3,400 colleges, universities, independent elementary and secondary schools and educational associates in 60 countries around the world. CASE is the professional organization for advancement professionals at all levels who work in alumni relations, communications, fundraising, marketing and other areas. In addition to Washington, D.C., it has offices in London and Singapore.

YorkU was launched in the fall of 2003 and is published bimonthly five times during the academic year – October, December, February, April and Summer. At least 15,000 copies of each issue are circulated on campus, addressed to faculty and staff and picked up by students at campus racks. The October, February and Summer editions are also sent to alumni and friends of the University, with circulation now reaching 200,000.
