FISU women’s hockey selection camp on tap at York

Aug 12, 2008

Five Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) first-team all-Canadians will attend the inaugural FISU Canadian women’s hockey selection camp, Aug. 11-15, at York’s Keele campus.

Twenty players at the camp will be competing for a spot on the Canadian roster at the 2009 FISU Winter Universiade, Feb. 18-28, in Harbin, China.

The camp is held in conjunction with the Canadian under-22 women’s selection camp at York. FISU Canadian coach Dan Church, coach of the York women’s Lions, who coached the under-22 team to an undefeated record last season in international play, will be scouting players from both camps to make his selections for the team.

The Ontario University Athletics (OUA) leads the way with seven players at the camp, including two players from host York University: forward Mandy Cole and defenceman Kelsey Webster. Cole will be making her return after breaking her left ankle last November in a game against the Brock Badgers.

Canada is one of eight teams competing in the first women’s hockey tournament at a Winter Universiade. All players must be full-time students at a CIS school.
