Register now for Take Our Kids to Work day

This year's Take Our Kids to Work program will take place Wednesday, Nov. 5 and York would like to continue to encourage Grade 9 students to become familiar with their parents' work environment and consider York as their university of choice.

Faculty and staff who would like to bring a Grade 9 student to York must complete and return the Registration and Permission and Release, Waiver & Indemnification forms by Oct. 31. Forms are available online at the links above. The forms should be completed, signed and returned to York's Insurance & Risk Management Services, Financial Department, Suite B, EOB. This program is intended for students who are presently in Grade 9.

To enhance the basic program of having students shadowing their parents at work, York has organized the following additional activities for the students. If you would like the student to participate in any of these activities, please complete the forms and send them by campus mail to Marian Hissa, Department of Human Resources & Employee Relations, Suite A, EOB, or by e-mail to hissam@yorku.ca.

10:15am - noon: Admissions, Orientation and Campus Tour, Senate Chamber, Room N940, North Ross Building

  • Open to first 70 students registered.
  • Session will start at 10:30am sharp – come a bit early but please don't be late.

Representatives from the Admissions Office will discuss the kind of work that is done in the admissions area and briefly talk about university study and the kinds of programs offered at York. A tour of the Keele campus will then be conducted at 11am. Students have the opportunity to visit different buildings on campus and to observe the activities that go on in each building. The tour's final destination is the lunch location in the Atkinson cafeteria.

Parents are expected to drop off and leave the students for this one hour and 45 minute supervised activity and then join them for lunch at noon in the Atkinson cafeteria (Michelangelo's), 024 Atkinson College.

Noon - 1pm: Lunch at Michelangelo's

The Office of the Vice-President Finance & Administration is sponsoring a free lunch of pizza, salad and soft drinks. This activity gives Grade 9 students and their parents a chance to meet. Monitors supervise the students during the lunch period. However, parents are expected to join the students for lunch at noon. The pizza lunch is open to the first 140 people to register.

Please note:

  • Each parent is responsible for coordinating arrangements to get the student to and from activities (i.e. students are not to tour or roam between activities without adult supervision).
  • No student is permitted to leave the lunch area until his/her parent (or adult designate) comes to get him/her.
  • These activities are available to all employee groups and the students they are sponsoring on a first-come, first-served basis.

Security Health & Safety

There are some areas of the campus such as workshops and scientific labs where operational risk factors may make it problematic to accommodate a Grade 9 student in the workplace. If you work in this type of environment and are uncertain, then consult the dean, executive officer or senior manager in your Faculty or department. Organizers will try to find an alternate supervised York worksite. Contact Marian Hissa, Department of Human Resources & Employee Relations at ext. 22246 or at hissam@yorku.ca.

All employees bringing children to participate in the Take Our Kids to Work program are reminded that the safety rules of the workplace apply to the students and, accordingly, each child should be instructed by the respective parent, guardian or adult.

The Take Our Kids to Work program was implemented by The Learning Partnership in 1994. Its mission is to continue to nurture the partnership among schools, businesses and communities devoted to strengthening our publicly funded school systems; to encourage caring adults to share their ideas, talents and resources with students; and to create learning opportunities that young people will find challenging and exciting.
