Women's hockey team to play in support of cancer research

The York Lions women’s hockey team will suit up for an exhibition game in support of cancer research on Thursday, Feb. 5 at Canlan Ice Sports beginning at 7pm. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The No. 10 nationally ranked Lions will take on the Toronto Junior Aeros of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) in the contest.

The Canadian Cancer Society is near and dear to the team’s heart. Lions captain Jessica Turi was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease four years ago at the tender age of 18. After 12 bouts of chemotherapy during which she successfully completed classes as a student at York University, Turi was pronounced healthy by her doctors. She spent that summer getting herself back into shape, joined the Lions in time for the 2005-2006 season and has been a valuable member of the squad every year since.

The 13-11 Lions are currently fourth in the Ontario University Athletics standings with three games left on the regular-season schedule and have won six of their past seven games. Meanwhile, Toronto is the top team in the PWHL with a sparkling 21-5-1 record and have won eight of their past 10.

Tickets are $8 or $5 for students and seniors and are available at the door.
