Once again York has won multiple medals, including three golds, in the North American regional Accolades Awards competition held annually by the Washington-based Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
For the third consecutive year, YFile and Ylife, in the Publications unit of York’s Marketing & Communications, tied for gold in the Electronic Newsletter category. The judges praised the extensive content of the sites/newsletters, their ease of use, speed and outstanding features. YFile is the University’s daily electronic newsletter for faculty and staff, edited by Jenny Pitt-Clark, while Ylife is York’s daily electronic newsletter for students, put together by David Fuller. The awards also include writers Sandra McLean and Martha Tancock, copy editor Marie Kopf and publications director Berton Woodward.
“It is gratifying to see these awards across electronic, magazine and multimedia categories and to see this success repeated year after year,” says Richard Fisher, chief marketing officer. “It is a testament to the quality and professionalism of the Marketing & Communications team with their partners across the University and in the York University Foundation.”

YorkU magazine in the Publications unit won gold in the Colour Photography category for the picture of Adrianne Carney taken by photographer KC Armstrong for the April 2008 issue. The shot was designed and overseen by James Nixon, YorkU’s art director, and was part of a feature story by Michael Todd, YorkU’s managing editor. The judges called the photo thought-provoking and visually provoking, saying: “A great image that utilized the environment surrounding the subject effectively. Flawless use of colour, lighting and overall composition.”
That’s not all. YorkU, edited by Woodward with contributions from all Publications unit staff as well as the Alumni Office and the Foundation, also snagged a bronze in the Magazines-Four-Year College/University category. The judges, describing the magazine as excellent, commented: “I really like the concise stories. The layout is organized and punchy. Great use of photo throughout the stories. Visually exciting covers. Great portrait images.” The judges also liked the branding throughout the magazine with the use of the York red.
In addition, gold went to York’s Account Direction unit for the 2007 Reputation Advertising Campaign in the Advertising-Multimedia Packages category. Clay Browne, account director, and Richard Fisher, were instrumental in developing the strategy for the campaign in collaboration with the doug agency and Gaggi Media.

Account Direction also won a silver in the Web site: News category for York’s Navig8 campaign developed by Robin Edmison, account director. Web content for the Navig8 campaign was developed by York’s Office of Admissions, which also maintains and oversees the blog and videos; 52 Pick-up Inc. was responsible for the overall design and wordmark; while Web site design and navigation was by Splash Interactive. Navig8 is a new Web site aimed at supporting York students as they transition to their next academic year. The Navig8 project gathers need-to-know information in one convenient e-place and provides online tools to help students manage the process and avoid much of the stress that accompanies the move from year to year.
The York University Foundation won a bronze in the Best Practices in Educational Fundraising category for its 50 to the Power of 50 group. It also received an honourable mention for its Speed Mentoring Event in the Special Events category, which involved members of the 50 to the Power of 50 group.
The group is composed of some of York University’s best-known and most accomplished alumni. Led by Ivan Fecan (BA ’01), head of CTVglobemedia, a leading Canadian multimedia company, and CTV Inc., a major national television network, the 50 Group was created to help showcase the success York’s graduates have achieved and how the York educational experience can truly redefine the possible. Members are invited to serve as goodwill ambassadors for their University and to participate in select 50th anniversary and campaign events and fundraising activities.
