He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and has taught at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Western Washington University, St. Lawrence University, the Vermont College of Fine Arts and the University of Utah. He has won numerous awards for his work. Hemley's byline has also appeared in many of the best literary magazines in the United States, including Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, Shenandoah, Willow Springs, Boulevard and many others.
