York’s U50 Faculty Honours book launched

York’s Faculty Honours book was launched last week to mark the University’s 50th anniversary and to celebrate and acknowledge faculty members for their academic contributions to the University and as distinguished Canadians.

Faculty Honours: 1959-2009 recognizes a total of 148 faculty members who have been named Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, Distinguished Research Professors, University Professors as well as companions, officers and members of the Order of Canada.

The book was first published for York’s 40th anniversary and was subsequently updated for the University’s 50th celebrations. Many of the faculty members listed in the book, along with three of York’s former presidents, attended the launch to applaud its publication.

“Thank you for what you’ve done for the University,” President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri said.

In the 10 years since the 40th-anniversary book was published, 61 more faculty members were honoured. “It became very obvious that we should update the book for York’s 50th anniversary,” said Shoukri. “I’ve always talked about the quality of faculty here at York. Thank you for allowing me to brag.”

Shoukri presented a copy of the book to University Librarian Cynthia Archer, who said it would be a great addition to York’s Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections, one of the best collections around.

In addition, a slim version of the Faculty Honours book was published, and each faculty member listed in the book will receive a copy.
