Marcus Melo, a visiting professor at Yale University from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil, will deliver a lunchtime seminar, titled “Uneven Political Development and Redistributive Politics in the Brazilian States”.
Melo’s talk will take place Friday, Oct. 30, from 12:45 to 2pm, in 280N York Lanes, Keele campus.

A political science professor, Melo was a Fulbright Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the author of Constitutional Reforms in Brazil: Political Institutions and Decision-Making Processes (Editora Revan, 2002) and the co-author of Regulatory Governance in Infrastructure Industries: Assessment and Measurement of Brazilian Regulators (The World Bank, 2006) and The Politics of Self-Help Housing (Editora Massangana, 1989).
In addition, he is the editor of Institutional Design and Political Participation in Contemporary Brazil (2006) and Reforming the State and Institutional Change (Editora Massangana, 2001). His scholarly articles have appeared in journals such as the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Comparative Political Studies and Latin American Politics and Society.
His research interests include Latin America, institutions and governance, constitutional politics, political economy of reforms, regulation, comparative federalism and social policy.
The seminar is sponsored by the City Institute at York University (CITY), the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, York’s Centre for Research on Latin America & the Caribbean, and Brazilian Studies at York.
