The first basketball doubleheader of the season tips off on Friday evening when the York University Lions welcome the University of Guelph Gryphons to the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The women’s game will begin at 6pm with the men following at 8pm. The two teams will also return to the floor the following night at the same time for games against the Brock University Badgers.

The women’s team opened the regular season at home two weeks ago in a narrow loss to the Laurentian University Lady Vees, and then both teams played their first doubleheaders on the road last weekend against the University of Western Ontario Mustangs and the University of Windsor Lancers. Both Lions squads are looking for their first wins of the season this weekend, as are both Gryphons teams after starting the season with defeats to the Carleton University Ravens and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Badgers men started at a strong 2-0 while the women are 1-1.
Between the two games there will be a ceremony to honour the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) champion York Lions men’s tennis team that won its second provincial banner in the last three years last month. Throughout the night there will also be contests and prizes in recognition of Friday the 13th.
The men’s hockey team is also back on home ice for another pair of games before a string of four out of five on the road. This weekend, the Lions will face off against the Queen’s University Gaels on Friday at 7pm and the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins on Saturday at 2pm. The Lions have gone 4-1-1 in their last six games with their most recent victory coming over the No. 7-nationally ranked University of Waterloo Warriors last Saturday. Both Queen’s and RMC play out of the OUA East division and are currently under .500 for the season.
Rounding out the home schedule is the women’s volleyball team. The Lions, who sit atop the OUA East standings with a 3-1 record, will play against the visiting RMC Paladins on Sunday afternoon at 3pm. The Paladins are still in search of their first victory of the season.
