To mark the 20th anniversary of the overthrow of communism in the German Democratic Republic and the fall of the Berlin Wall dividing east and west Germany, York’s Canadian Centre for German & European Studies (CCGES) will host a poster exhibit, titled From Peaceful Revolution to German Unity.
The exhibit, presented in cooperation with the German Consulate General Toronto and the Federal Foundation for the Critical Appraisal of the SED-Dictatorship, will take place during office hours from Monday, Nov. 23, to Friday, Dec. 11, 10am to 6pm, in the second floor foyer of the York Research Tower, Keele campus.
From Peaceful Revolution to German Unity marks the 1989 crumbling of the wall, the ending of the Cold War, and the reunification of Germany on Oct. 3, 1990. It is a series of photographs, many of which are iconic, taken by a variety of news agencies, with explanatory texts that tell the story of the events that year which changed the world.
The exhibit has travelled across the country. This is its last Canadian showing.
In addition, the BMW Canada Award for Excellence, presented annually to a student enrolled in the CCGES Graduate Diploma Program who is judged to best combine academic excellence with a contribution to centre life, will be awarded during the exhibit’s opening reception Monday, Nov. 23, at 7:30pm.
