University ombudsperson issues call for submissions on YFS elections

The University administration has received a significant number of complaints from York students regarding the conduct of the recent York Federation of Students (YFS) elections.

On March 19, in response to the complaints, York President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri asked University Ombudsperson John McCamus, former dean of Osgoode Hall Law School, to undertake a review of the 2010 YFS elections. (See YFile, March 22, for terms of reference.)

McCamus has been asked to report on whether there are changes in the election procedures, processes or practices that should be implemented in future elections in order to ensure transparency, fairness and the avoidance of conflicts.

To facilitate this review and to gain a better sense of the issues involved, McCamus is requesting written submissions on these topics be submitted by e-mail to ombuds@yorku.ca by May 15.
