Art galleries mount three student shows

Three more art shows go on display tomorrow as York visual arts graduate students mount thesis exhibitions at downtown and campus galleries.

Shows by master of fine arts candidates Catherine Lane and Jennifer Linton open with receptions Thursday evening at neighbouring Queen Street West galleries. Dustin Wenzel’s show closes with a reception May 4.

Lane’s exhibition, Narrative 3: Piles, opens Thursday at Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects, 1082 Queen St. W., with a reception from 7 to 10pm. The show features a collection of 2-D and 3-D ink and watercolour drawings on paper in which the artist explores three separate stories by drawing narrative elements and connecting them in piles. By removing sequence and leaving gaps, Lane invites viewers to fill in their own narratives. The show continues to May 9.

Linton’s thesis show, The Disobedient Dollhouse, opens Thursday at the Board of Directors Gallery, 1086 Queen St. W., with a reception from 7 to 10pm. It is an installation featuring giant insects, damask "wallpaper" and one very gothic paper dollhouse. The installation closes May 9.

Wenzel’s thesis show, New Wonderment, opens on campus tomorrow at Gales Gallery, 105 Accolade West Building. The artist mixes sculpture and new media with traditional anatomical illustrations, medical models and modern medical images to find ways to create images of the heart. With visual, physical, spatial, time-based and acoustic experiences, New Wonderment encourages a whole-body encounter intended to evoke a sense of wonder without seeing the real thing. A closing reception takes place May 4 from 5 to 8pm.

Thesis shows by two other MFA candidates close this week. Lauren Goldman’s exhibit of paintings, What You Wish For, closes Sunday at AWOL Gallery, 76 Ossington Ave. And Zev Farber’s multimedia installation, If It Happened At All, It Happened This Way, closes Friday at the Special Project Gallery, Main Lobby, Joan & Martin Goldfarb Centre for Fine Arts at York’s Keele campus.
