York design students participate in New Bloor Festival
Bloor Street West from Dufferin Street to Russett Avenue will be designated the food court, wrote the Bloor West Villager July 15 in a story about the upcoming New Bloor Festival on July 24. There will be an art court featuring work by York University and OCAD University students.
York grad runs for council in Bradford
A manager of one of Bradford’s most recognizable landmarks is seeking the Ward 2 council seat in the Oct. 25 municipal election, wrote the Bradford West Gwillimbury Topic July 15.
Stephen Dykie (BA Hons. ’99) grew up in Bradford and, along with his brother, Bill Jr., took over management of the Village Inn from their father.
“I figured it’s my time to step up,” Dykie said of his decision to run for council. “I’m young, ready to take on a new task, willing to learn and willing to make very educated financial decisions on behalf of the citizens of Bradford.”
Dykie said downtown revitalization is among his top priorities. He studied political science and urban studies as double-majors at York University and said this background helps him in dealing with the issue.
Grad vies for quarter century in office
Ward 3 & 4 Regional Councillor Richard Whitehead (BA ’91) has 21 years of experience on Caledon’s Council, wrote the Caledon Enterprise July 15. And he’s going for a cool quarter century by asking for your vote for another term in office. He was first elected deputy reeve of the village of Bolton in 1971, and in 1974 was elected the first regional councillor for Ward 5 Bolton.
He returned to office in 1991 and served four consecutive terms as the regional councillor for Wards 3 & 4. He brings to office a political science & sociology degree from York University.
Springwater mayor envisions Elmvale as community campus
When Springwater Mayor Tony Guergis walked through York University’s Keele campus with his daughter, Sarah, he realized the campus was a community – a compact community not unlike Elmvale, wrote Simcoe.com July 15.
“York University is very similar to Elmvale. It has an arena, a library, a main street where you can go to the pharmacy. Everything Elmvale has is so similar.”
