It’s the weekend before term begins and students have been everywhere on campus all week, dressed in colourful T-shirts, taking part in Frosh Week activities officially known as Social Orientation. Events began Monday and run through this Sunday.

Each college council organizes its own events but many of them get together on the larger events such as the one-day outing to Wasaga Beach, boat cruise on Lake Ontario and a trip to Canada’s Wonderland. Several colleges also banded together for dinner at the newly renovated Underground in the Student Centre being held today.
One new event this year was titled “Can I Kiss You?” featuring dating expert Mike Domitrz. It was presented by York’s Centre for Human Rights Wednesday in the Centre for Excellence in the Rexall Centre. (See YFile, Sept. 3.) Several colleges added this lively look at dating, intimacy and mutual consent to their schedule.
Other special events this year included comedy, cabaret and karaoke evenings along with the usual parties and competitions between first-year students and their upper-year colleagues.

While Social Orientation isn’t mandatory, says York’s Centre for Student Community & Leadership Development (SC&LD), it is highly recommended for all new undergraduate students.
Events are scheduled until Sept. 12, except those for the Schulich School of Business which wrap up tonight.
