The York University Lions soccer teams continued their three-game road trip with a stop at Alumni Field on Saturday, Sept. 11 to battle the University of Windsor Lancers in an afternoon double-header. The men’s team dominated in a 6-0 victory, while the women’s team suffered a hard-fought 3-0 loss.
In the men’s match, the Lions scored early and often in a one-sided affair. Fourth-year defenceman Jamaal Smith needed only six minutes to net the first goal of the game that gave the Lions a 1-0 lead. Smith’s goal would prove to be the game winner.

Fourth-year midfielder Franecesco Vescio and rookie Alon Badat led the Lions’ offensive onslaught. Vescio recorded two goals – both in the second half – on two shots, and Badat impressed with one goal and five shots. Adrian Pena and Moreno Alberti rounded out the scoring for the Lions with goals in the 55th and 88th minutes, respectively. Pena and Alberti now lead the OUA in scoring with three goals each.
In the women’s match, the Lancers scored three goals in the first half and fought off a surging Lions team in the second half for a well-earned win. Read more at the York Lions site.
Football Lions defeated by No. 3 Gee-Gees
The York University Lions football team could not overcome the offensive firepower of quarterback Brad Sinopoli and the No. 3-ranked University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, falling 45-3 at York Stadium on Saturday.

The Lions (0-2) enjoyed a standout game from Steven Reading as the fourth-year linebacker compiled eight solo tackles and one assisted tackle to go along with a broken up pass attempt.
Reading wasn’t the only Lion to put up big numbers on the other side of the ball. Defensive back Theo Feroiu and cornerback Andre Clarke each had six solo tackles and an interception, two of three picks that the team forced, Read more.
Rugby Lions open season with road loss to Varsity Blues
It was a tough season opener for the York University Lions women’s rugby team, losing to inter-city rivals, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 32-12 on Saturday.

The Lions roared out of the gates as rookie Sarah Galati scored her first try of her university career, putting the Lions in front, 5-0.
However, it was going to be difficult to shut down Toronto’s offence as Blues centre Lee-Anne Corrigan propelled her team to the lead with 17 points and two tries in the game. Read more.
