Weekend wrap: Women's rugby Lions defeat Trent to earn playoff berth

It was a huge game for the York University Lions women’s rugby team on Friday, Oct. 8 – and they delivered with a 25-7 victory over the Trent University Excalibur, launching themselves into the playoffs.

The Lions (2-3) hit the board first as fourth-year veteran winger Tiera Thomas-Reynolds had a great run down the sideline to score York’s first try.

Thomas-Reynolds outflanked three Excalibur players, before using her speed to rush into the opponent’s end zone. See more details at the York Lions site.

Men’s hockey Lions defeat Lancers in chippy afternoon affair

The York University Lions men’s hockey team defeated the University of Windsor Lancers by a score of 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 9 in a rematch of their home opener, which saw the Lions triumph 5-2 over the same Lancers squad.

Lions captain Chris Jones and second-year forward Mackenzie Micks led a third period Lions rally that saw them erase a one goal Lancers lead and fire off three unanswered goals on their way to victory. More details.


Soccer Lions sweep Badgers

It was a tremendous afternoon for the York University Lions men’s and women’s soccer teams as they both emerged victorious against the Brock University Badgers on Saturday afternoon, in a great showing of strength and resolve.

In the women’s game, it was a tense affair between teams with defence playing a central role in denying chances for the squads.

Lions’ rookie forward Sonia Sampona broke the stalemate with a shot that zipped past Luciana Di Paolo in the 88th minute to seal the victory. Goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini earned the shutout for the Lions.

In the men’s game that followed, the contest was a showdown between two hungry teams.

Fourth-year forward Moreno Alberti struck the back of the net in the 58th minute to tie the game, and Gerard Ladiyou claimed victory for the visiting side with a goal in the 73rd minute. More details.

Football Lions fall to Lancers on Saturday

The York University Lions football team was defeated 61-15 by the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon on the road.

The first quarter saw a rampant pace with a total of four turnovers between the two teams. The Lions struck first, getting on the board after a 61-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Frank to receiver Jonelle Tolbert just two-and-a-half minutes into the game.

The lead was short-lived, however; the Lancers quickly responded as Austin Kennedy found a wide open Jordan Brescacin on a 33-yard pass to tie the game at 7-7.

The first quarter ended with the Lions on top 13-7 as James Tuck recovered the ball in the Lancers end zone after fourth-year linebacker Tyler De Moel blocked a punt attempt deep in Lancers territory. More details.

Late rally by women’s hockey Lions not enough to top Gryphons

The York University Lions women’s hockey team staged a late third period rally in their second game of the season against the Guelph University Gryphons on Sunday, but ultimately fell short, losing the game by a score of 4-3.

Chloe Milano and Autumn Mills scored just 19 seconds apart with under two minutes left in regulation, but the Lions could not find another goal before the final horn sounded. More details.
