In what is being hailed as the beginning of an international educational collaboration between world-class law schools, York’s Osgoode Hall Law School is hosting a three-day academic workshop starting today and running until Oct. 27 with faculty from Jindal Global Law School in India.
In addition, a special business seminar, “Accessing India”, will look at foreign direct investment and mining. The seminar, which is sponsored by Bennett Jones LLP, the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Hennick Centre for Business & Law at York’s Osgoode Hall Law School and Schulich School of Business, will follow the workshop. Speakers will include Sriram H. Iyer, president and CEO of ICICI Bank Canada Inc. and Preeti Saran, consul general of India.

The “Accessing India” event is open to York faculty and students on Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 3 to 5pm at Bennett Jones LLP, First Canadian Place, 100 King St. W., 34th floor, Toronto. A reception will follow. As space is limited, RSVP today to Elizabeth Saati, assistant director of the Hennick Centre for Business & Law, at esaati@osgoode.yorku.ca.
The academic workshop, “Global North and Global South Perspectives on Transnational Governance: An Indian-Canadian Conversation”, will bring together globally minded scholars, who have expertise in related fields of law, but who also understand their fields from different vantage points rooted in their South Asian or North American experience, said Professor Lisa Philipps, associate dean of research, Graduate Studies & Institutional Relations, at Osgoode.
“The academic workshop will facilitate collaborative research that bridges north-south perspectives on transnational governance, and will contribute to knowledge about Canada-India legal relations,” Philipps said.
The workshop is funded by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada and Osgoode’s Jack & Mae Nathanson Centre on Transnational Human Rights, Crime & Security. It will be followed up in March 2011 with a three-day workshop at Jindal Global Law School, the flagship school of O.P. Jindal Global University located in Sonipat, Haryana, in the National Capital Region of Delhi, India.
