Temporary road construction for York University subway station to start soon

The second phase of advanced roadway work at the east end of the Harry W. Arthurs Common on York’s Keele campus will begin this month in preparation for York University subway station construction. The temporary roadways will allow transit vehicles to continue to serve the campus throughout the station construction period.

Construction this fall will include:

  • Construction of a temporary roadway through York Boulevard Parking Lot, which will connect Ian Macdonald Boulevard at Vanier Lane with York Boulevard at the signalized intersection of the TTC busway.
  • Bus bay construction on Ian Macdonald Boulevard north of Vanier Lane where VIVA, YRT and Brampton Transit (Züm) buses will stop once the construction of the subway starts in early 2011.
  • Sidewalk construction on the north side of Ian Macdonald Boulevard in front of the Toronto Track & Field Centre.
  • Constructing facilities for the relocation of the Welcome Centre from York Boulevard to the northeast corner of The Pond Road and Ian Macdonald Boulevard.

Construction of these facilities is expected to be complete by late December.

Work hours

Work will normally run from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday.

VIVA, YRT and Brampton Transit bus stop relocations

Existing VIVA, YRT and Brampton Transit (Züm) services will continue to operate on Ian Macdonald Boulevard in front of the Archives of Ontario building while these temporary works are underway and until the start of the subway construction early in 2011. Bus stop relocation information on Ian Macdonald Boulevard will be posted just prior to relocations.

Traffic impact and pedestrian safety

Traffic control personnel will be on campus to facilitate the safe movement of pedestrian, transit and vehicular traffic around the construction work areas. All existing roads will remain open and operational during the temporary road works, and access to the York Boulevard Parking Lot will be maintained on York Boulevard.

Motorists may face traffic delays. Disruption to transit services will be minimized as much as possible.

Construction vehicle access

Construction vehicles will continue to access the campus via York Boulevard from Keele Street. During deliveries of construction material and equipment, traffic movement on York Boulevard and Keele Street may be delayed or limited to a reduced speed.
