Next York-Noor lecture looks at the birthday of the Prophet

Professor Marion H. Katz of New York University will deliver two talks as part of the 2010-2011 York-Noor Lecture Series: Recent Publications on Islam and Muslim Societies.

The first lecture, “Emotion, Merit and the Celebration of the Birthday of the Prophet Muhammad”, will take place Sunday, Nov. 14, from 3 to 5pm at the Noor Cultural Centre, 123 Wynford Drive (Don Valley Parkway and Eglinton Avenue) in Toronto.

The second, “A Celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday: Popular?” will take place Monday, Nov. 15, from11:30 to 2:30pm in the Vanier Senior Common Room, 010 Vanier College, Keele campus.

Katz is a professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Department of Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies at New York University. Her main research interests are Islamic law, gender and ritual. She has published numerous articles in academic books and journals on various topics, including aspects of women’s ritual practices and abortion in medieval legal text. She is author of The Birth of the Prophet Muhammad: Devotional Piety in Sunni Islam (Routledge, 2007) and Body of Text: The Emergence of the Sunni Law of Ritual Purity (SUNY, 2002).
