Recycling e-waste at York is now even easier

Community members can now recycle their e-waste through York’s ZeroWaste program. Whether it’s a battery, ink cartridge or any electronic device, from computers to blenders, it can be collected for recycling.

Batteries and ink cartridges can be put in the specially marked white bins located at most loading docks around campus and within residence complexes. The number of battery bins has nearly tripled over the last year, increasing from nine to 23.

Community members may leave all other types of e-waste at any loading dock near the communal tri-bin waste stations. Just label the items with a Waste Removal Tag and custodial staff will remove it. For a significant amount of e-waste, community members are asked to fill out a Service Request.

All of York University’s e-waste is sent to Ontario Electronic Stewardship-approved collectors, which require that all items are processed within Ontario – York’s e-waste is not exported outside of the province. York’s collectors/processors are ISO 14001 certified and estimate that a minimum of 85 per cent of the components from the e-waste processed are recycled.
