See 100 historic mug shots on display at Archives of Ontario

Starting Oct. 22 and continuting until Dec. 9, the Archives of Ontario Mug shot of Edward Bakeris hosting Arresting Images, a collection of 100 historical police mug shots dating from 1886 to 1908.

Right: Mug shot of Edward Baker, arrested on June 22, 1900. Baker stole approximately one dollar’s worth of railway tickets and 44 cigars and mutilated two machines. He was 18 and sentenced to serve two years less a day. Deemed fit to serve his sentence doing hard labour, Baker was released on June 21, 1902.

The award-winning exhibit is offered in both official languages and was developed by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Museum based in Orillia, Ont.

Arresting Images showcases some of the most interesting faces in the collection of mug shots and includes the case file information for each individual, as well as selected artifacts from the OPP Museum’s holdings. Suspected crimes include pickpocketing, forgery, opium eating and murder.

The exhibit will be on display in the Archives of Ontario’s Helen McClung Gallery, 134 Ian Macdonald Blvd. Exhibit hours are 8:30am to 5:30pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30am to 8pm on Tuesday and Thursday, and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
