Rabia Sajun wins President for a Day contest

Photograph of the president for a day contest winner Rabia SajunAfter weeks of amusing promotions, witty tweets and a funny video starring York President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, the inaugural President for a Day contest is now closed and a winner has been selected. On Feb. 28, Rabia Sajun, a third-year biochemistry and education student, will become York University's President for a Day.

“I would like to congratulate Rabia on her winning submission,” said Shoukri. “I am proud of all of our students and she certainly is no exception. As a student in our accelerated program, she has truly embraced the York culture and spirit.”

In what could be a first in Canada, Sajun will swap roles with Shoukri for a day. She will manage the institution, attend all of his meetings and take care of his many other obligations and duties. That same day, Shoukri will attend all of Sajun’s classes and participate in her many extracurricular activities in order to really appreciate student life.

"It is clear that the promotional campaign had an impact on many of our undergraduate students," says Shoukri. In total, almost 40 students were inspired to submit an essay or video answering the question: “What would be your top three priorities that would directly impact students if you were appointed president of York University?”

Sajun’s winning entry addressed the need to expand the Steacie Library, decrease class sizes and enhance campus safety.

“I haven’t been a student in some time, so I am really looking forward to attending Rabia’s classes, while also learning more about the student experience here at York,” Shoukri said.
