Vari Hall will be flooded with sustainable initiatives this week, leading up to World Water Day on March 22.
Starting today and continuing through Thursday, Sustainability @ York in conjunction with Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is bringing the SGI Seeds of Hope poster exhibit back to the Keele campus. Originally presented last fall, the exhibit will be on display each day from 10am to 4pm.
In addition to Seeds of Hope, the President’s Sustainability Council, the Institute for Research & Innovation in Sustainability (IRIS), Smart Commute and the Maloca Community Garden will be hosting information tables for visitors interested in learning more about the many ideas and opportunities for making the Keele and Glendon campuses and their communities more sustainable.
Based on a simple premise – “it starts with one” – the The Seeds of Hope poster exhibit conveys the importance of individual action for community sustainability. Through a series of 24 panels, it focuses on the themes of interconnectedness, social justice and peace to show how one idea can inspire and transform an entire community towards sustainable living.
The exhibit offers examples of how individuals and small groups inspired by the Earth Charter have taken simple actions to create more sustainable 
communities. Accompanying the exhibit is a sculpture made out of used water bottles to help raise awareness about bottled water and water issues.
The event is part of launch celebrations for the University’s new Sustainability website, which will serve as a hub for those interested in learning more about sustainability at York. The website features information on a wide variety of initiatives underway at the Keele and Glendon campuses. It offers suggestions for ways individuals and groups can get involved in sustainability by taking a pledge or becoming involved in the Sustainability Ambassadors or Green Office programs.
