Passings: Nancy Hall devoted 45 years to York University

Nancy Hall, a long-serving member of the York community, died on Tuesday, May 22, surrounded by her family.

Known for her love of life, especially her family, friends, garden and books, Ms. Hall was a dedicated employee and devoted Nancy Hall45 years to the York University Libraries, most recently as manager of Acquisitions.

Co-workers described her as a lovely person and a wonderful colleague, and were appreciative of her thorough competence, which assisted and supported them in their responsibilities. “She was extremely capable and generous with her knowledge and advice. The York Libraries were lucky that for so many years she played such a key role in building the collections,” said Catherine Davidson, associate University librarian, Collections.

University librarian Cynthia Archer provided the following tribute upon Nancy’s retirement at the end of 2008. “She has been invaluable in helping York University Libraries be prepared for a world of digitization (she most recently started acquiring e-books for our students with disabilities), internationalization (each year she has expedited the acquisitions of more materials from other countries), and transformation (she was an active contributor to The Libraries’ strategic plan – Open Doors, Open Minds).”

Ms. Hall was active in the Professional and Managerial Group of York University (now known as the CPMEA) and served on the Communications Committee for 10 years, from 1990 to 1999, editing the association’s monthly newsletter the P&M News.

Visitation will be held at Highland Funeral Home, 3280 Sheppard Avenue East on Thursday, May 31, from 6 to 9pm, and Friday, June 1, from 1 to 2pm. For more information, contact the Highland Funeral Home by telephone at 416-773-0933.

The funeral service for Ms. Hall will be held in the Highland Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 1, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
