Tennis star Daniel Nestor to receive honorary degree

Daniel Nestor playing tennisCanadian tennis champion Daniel Nestor will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from York University on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Nestor is Canada's most celebrated tennis athlete. He is a 2000 Olympic gold medalist and competed in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England.

The University is conferring the honour on Nestor in recognition of his exemplary athletic achievements, commitment to sport, community service and promotion of health science.

“Daniel’s contributions to the sport of tennis and the broader community are truly inspiring,” said York University President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri.

In addition to representing Canada at the 2000 and 2012 Olympic Summer Games, Nestor has won 75 men’s doubles titles and three Grand Slam doubles titles with partner Mark Knowles of the Bahamas. Nestor achieved the world number one ranking for a doubles player in August 2002. He is also Canada’s first-ever Wimbledon champion, reaching the finals of the 2002 and 2005 tournaments.

He has contributed his time and name to support numerous organizations, including the Toronto-based community service organization Project Engagement, and hosting The Nestor Event on behalf of the North York General Hospital Foundation.

In celebration of Nestor’s most recent achievement, Shoukri will host a special ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 7 that will be attended by student athletes and members of the University community.

"We are proud to welcome Daniel home for the first time as the newest member of the York family,” added Shoukri.
