Prof turns poet’s hat over to students

Priscila Uppal in London for the Summer Olympic and Paralympic GamesYork English Professor Priscila Uppal has donned her poet’s hat and is madly scribbling ditties about every Summer Olympic sport, including those in the Paralympics, but now she is turning her pen over to you.

Uppal will judge the upcoming Summer Sport Poetry Competition for the Literary Review of Canada. This Griffin-nominated poet is encouraging all Canadian residents, including University students, established poets and first-timers alike, to go for poetic gold.

Three winners will be chosen and awarded “gold,” “silver” or “bronze” prize packs. The poem that takes “gold” will be published online and in print in the Literary Review of Canada. But in keeping with Uppal’s foray into Olympic sport poetry, the poems must be about a summer sport.

Other prizes will include copies of Uppal’s Winter Sport: Poems (Mansfield Press, 2010) – poems from the Winter Olympics – and subscriptions to the Literary Review of Canada. Uppal is currently working on the forthcoming book, Summer Sport: Poems, a compilation of poems from her time as poet-in-residence for the Canadian Athletes Now Fund during the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics.

Any style or form, the poem must be 30 lines or less. The deadline for submission is midnight Sept. 10 with winners being announced Sept. 24 at Poet’s Corner.

Entry is free. Send submissions to games@reviewcanada.ca.
