The York University Lions women’s hockey team defeated the visiting Brock University Badgers 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Canlan Ice Sports, earning its first victory of the 2012-2013 season.
The Lions offence pressed early, looking to find the first goal. Defender Megan Finlay and forward Erin Cameron both fired shots off the post before defender Kristen Barbara found the back of the net, receiving a pass in front of the net from Kiri Langford and firing it past Badger goalie Claire Shaw.
Sarai Whitty was credited with the second assist.
Lions’ goalie Megan Lee made six saves in the first period to keep the Badgers off the board, including a three-shot barrage off of offensive pressure late in the period. Lee stood tall, and York went into the second period with a 1-0 advantage. More details on York Lions website.
The victory was a big one for the squad, which rebounded from a shaky season-opening loss on Saturday to the University of Guelph Gryphons. The Gryphons won that contest by a score of 5-1, with the lone goal coming from defender Rebecca Bond. More details.
Women’s rugby Lions fall to Queen’s, clinch third in east
The York University Lions women’s rugby team dropped their final regular season game by a score of 72-11 to the undefeated Queen’s University Gaels in Kingston, Ont., on Friday night but had already clinched a playoff spot before the game began.
The Lions finish the season with a 3-3 record and 16 points, which puts them in third place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Russell Division. They will face the McMaster University Marauders on the road in Hamilton, Ont., next weekend in the quarter-finals. The Gaels, meanwhile, posted a perfect 6-0 mark and clinched first place in the division. Their first round opponent will be the Trent University Excalibur.
Zoe Smith scored the team’s lone try of the game in the 57th minute, while Alexis Boltsis kicked a pair of penalty goals, the first in the 28th minute and the second just two minutes before Smith’s major. More details.
Downes scores winner as men’s soccer Lions top Gryphons
Tyrone Downes netted his first goal of the season in the 79th minute to give the York University Lions men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over the host University of Guelph Gryphons at the Gryphons Soccer Complex on Friday night.
With the win, the No. 1 nationally-ranked Lions kept their undefeated season intact and are now 10-0-1 on the year, while the Gryphons slipped to 5-5-1. The Lions currently hold a six-point advantage over the McMaster Marauders in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West standings. More details.
Women’s soccer Lions, Gryphons play to 1-1 draw
The York University Lions women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with the University of Guelph Gryphons a the Gryphons Soccer Complex on Friday night (Oct. 5).
Rookie striker Nour Ghoneim scored the lone goal for the Lions in the 66th minute, just one minute after Guelph first got on the board when Lauren Hampton netted the game’s first goal. Hampton weaved her way into the Lions’ box and was able to connect on a strong pass to score on the team’s first shot of the game.
The Lions got their first solid scoring chance in the 15th minute after a corner kick found its way through the Gryphon defence but was stopped by Guelph goalkeeper Alex King, one of her three saves in the first half. More details.
No. 1 Marauders top football Lions in first ever night game at York Stadium
The York University Lions football team was defeated by the No. 1 nationally-ranked McMaster University Marauders 54-14 on Thursday evening (Oct. 4), in the first ever night game at York Stadium.
The Marauders extended their record to 6-0 on the year won their 16th straight game, dating back to Week 2 of the 2011 season. They remain the only team in the OUA with an undefeated mark on the year. The Lions, meanwhile, dropped to 1-5.
Both of York’s touchdowns were scored by Jonelle Tolbert, the first from quarterback Myles Gibbon in the second quarter and the second late in the fourth by back-up Dimitar Sevdin. More details.
