York’s Scotiabank Charity Challenge team is ready to run in Sunday’s marathon

On Sunday, Oct. 14, a team of 25 staff, faculty and students from York University will be participating in the 2012 Scotiabank Charity Challenge to raise much needed funds for York University students who are registered with Counselling & Disability Services.

Team Captain, Jayne Greene-Black began running in the event in 2008 when she joined a group of friends who had organized a run to raise money for their charity. “During the run, I realized just how many different charities were represented at this Scotiabank event and I thought about how great it would be to run for students with disabilities at York because so many of our students had needs that were not being met,” says Greene-Black.

There are many students at York University who fall unexpectedly into hard times due to illness, death of family members, or other life challenges. The money raised each year supports a bursary that assists these students so they can stay in school, says Greene-Black.

“Overall, my favourite thing is contributing to the development of a bursary that assists York students in distress and financial need. It is a win-win combination.  It is great to be involved in a fun activity that helps me and others stay fit, while contributing to a larger good within the York community,” she says.

“Although money doesn’t solve all of their issues, the bursary may be just enough to alleviate some of their stressors. For example, it may make the difference for them to eat beyond the food bank items. It may assist them in getting books and other educational services that they might have been unable to obtain without this added income.”

Every gift helps bring York University team closer to its goal to raise $10,000 and to making a  huge difference for students accessing Counselling &  Disability services for help.
