Rookie striker Nour Ghoneim scored four goals to lead the York University Lions women’s soccer team to a 6-0 victory over the Brock University Badgers in the final weekend home game of the regular season on Sunday.
York’s first good chance to score came in the game’s 10th minute, when Rita Keimakh found a cross pass in front of the net but missed the shot high over the cross bar. She also contributed some fancy footwork to establish an offensive rhythm in the 17th minute, as the Lions were able to gain possession of the ball in the box, but unable to beat Badgers goaltender Luiciana Di Paolo.

The Lions put themselves on the board in the 22nd minute off the first goal of the game from Ghoneim, who kicked in an easy ball off a surprise pass from Gina Kripotos. More details on the York Lions website.
Ghoneim also netted a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks on Wednesday night in Oshawa, Ont.
She gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead with a goal just 13 minutes into the game. She scored her second in the 56th minute, an insurance marker the Lions would not need. Overall, she tallied four shots on net in the game to lead all players.
Goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini earned the shutout in net, her sixth of the season, after making five saves. More details.
Pena scores twice as men’s soccer Lions beat Badgers
Fifth-year striker Adrian Pena scored a pair of goals to lead the York University Lions men’s soccer team to a narrow 3-2 victory over the Brock University Badgers on Sunday afternoon at York Stadium.
Pena is now tied for the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) scoring lead with 14 goals in 13 games.
With the win, the No. 1 nationally-ranked Lions remain undefeated on the season and improve to 12-0-1. They are still in first place in the OUA West standings with a three-point cushion over the McMaster Marauders. More details.
Pena also scored one goal when the Lions’ defeated the host University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks by a score of 2-0 at Vaso’s Field in Oshawa, Ont., on Wednesday night.
Charlie Trafford scored the other goal for the Lions, with both goals coming in the first half. Trafford opened the scoring in the 21st minute, and Pena followed in the 35th.
UOIT went stride-for-stride with the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) powerhouse all night long but was unable to beat Sotiri Varlokostas of Toronto. The York goalkeeper stopped all four Ridgeback shots on net for his eighth shutout of the season. More details.
Men’s hockey Lions trample Thunderwolves for season’s first win
The York University Lions men’s hockey team defeated the Lakehead University Thunderwolves 6-3 on Saturday night in the second game of a weekend doubleheader in Thunder Bay, Ont.
The Lions offence exploded early in the game, posting five goals in the first period to take a commanding lead they would not relinquish.
Michael Lombardi scored first just a minute and a half into the game. Jordan Davies added another goal just over a minute later, and Mackenzie Micks scored at 4:06 of the first to bring the Lions to a 3-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game. More details.
The win was a solid rebound for the team after falling by a score of 7-3 to the Thunderwolves in the season opener on Friday night.
The Thunderwolves’ goals came from seven different contributors. They started scoring early, as Luke Judson picked up a power play goal just 1:26 into the first period.
York was able to equalize on a goal by Micks with just over a minute remaining in the first, and were able to carry the tied score into the second. More details.
Marauders eliminate Lions in women’s rugby OUA quarter-final
The York University Lions women’s rugby team went down to the McMaster University Marauders by a score of 43-14 in their OUA quarter-final game on Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, Ont.
The loss ends what was a strong season for the Lions. They finished third in the OUA Russell Division with a 3-3 record, earning wins over Laurier, Trent and Toronto, before falling to the second-seeded Marauders in the first playoff game.
The two squads played a close match for much of the contest as McMaster led by single digits with just 20 minutes left on the clock. But the Marauders found their offensive touch at the end, putting up 24 points late in the second half, to seal the victory. More details.
Easty scores two in field hockey win over Martlets
Anna Easty scored two goals to lead the York University Lions field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the McGill University Martlets at Downsview Park on Sunday morning.
Easty is in her first season with the Lions. After spending three seasons with the University of Connecticut, she scored all three Lions goals on the weekend for her first three scores of the year.
The Lions dominated play for much of the first half, but it was the Martlets that got on the board first with an action goal in the 28th minute off the stick of Annelies Calnan.
McGill carried its one goal lead into halftime, and through the early part of the second, but the Lions finally got on the board in the 51st minute when Easty scored on a corner. More details.
Women’s hockey Lions shut out by Gaels in playoff rematch
The York University Lions women’s hockey team suffered a 3-0 shutout loss against the Queen’s University Gaels on the road on Saturday night in Kingston, Ont.
The game was the first between the two teams since the Lions upset the Gaels, who then were the defending OUA champions, in the first round of the playoffs last season. But the Gaels were the dominant team in this contest and picked up their second win of the year.
Queen’s put up its first marker in the opening period, with Allie Biglieri scoring at 10:33 of the first period. Morgan McHaffie added an insurance goal in the second period, scoring on the power play at 1:25. More details.
